The Innovative Corporate Strategy of Tesla, a Revolutionary Solar Technology and Sustainable Transport Company Essay

Founded in 2003, Tesla was established "by a group of engineers in Silicon Valley who wanted to prove that electric cars could be better than gasoline-powered cars (Tesla, 2016). They knew they were attempting the impossible, their Executive Summary even stated this sounds impossible both the idea of building cars in the first place, and further, the idea of building high-performance electric car (Baer, 2014). Despite having three remarkable automobiles in their portfolio, the one that stands out is the Model X, considering it is a SUV with no CO2 emissions. The BMW i8 does give the Model X a run for its money, even though Tesla is in a league of its own. Considering the level of difficulty Tesla faced being a first mover with this revolutionary idea, being strategic was essential. Their company mission is to accelerate the worlds transition to sustainable transport (Tesla, 2016). On the technology aspect of production, there wasnt a problem, theyre experts in the field, the nuts and bolts of automobile manufacturing (Baer, 2014), was the issue. In planning their entrance into the industry, they found that the automotive ecosystem had quietly made itself inviting to startups (Baer, 2014). Major automakers were outsourcing production of various parts, all they needed were connections with the right manufacturing partners. The implementation of their plans proved too tedious their remedy was hiring a new CEO so they could focus on their passion the product. This passion didnt end when the concept became reality, they wanted to get feedback from the customers. After some research they realized, by using dealerships theyd lose opportunities to gather feedback (Baer, 2014), buying direct was the best solution for the companys strategies and goals.
