The Importance of Leading by Example Essay

Leaders have many different styles such as by example or throughwords. It has been argued that leading by example is one of the mosteffective styles of leadership. Many great leaders tend to lead by examplesuch as Winston Churchill. When conservatisms turned to Churchill for helpduring World War II he successful lead by example with his character,determination and eloquence (Greenberg, 2011). Churchill was brave anddetermined to not let Hitler into Britain. Through leading by example,Churchill was able to achieve his goals and inspire followers. The Importance of Leading by Example No two leaders are identical. Some choose to lead by example andothers by word. Leading by example means that the leader contributes to thepublic good before followers can make their contribution (Dannenberg,2015). In other words, leading by example is when a leader takes initiationtowards their goals and based on their example, expects their followers todo the same. There has been extensive research and studies about theeffectiveness of leading by example. Dannenberg from the scholarly journalSocial Choice and Welfare highlights on the importance of leading byexample. Dannenberg's study proves that leading by example is beneficialbecause actions speak louder than words and followers will contribute more.Actions Speak Louder than Words There is an old saying "actions speak louder than words" and there'ssignificant evidence to support this. In regards to leadership, setting anexample can be more effective than a pledge to contribute. Dannenberg(2015) states, "regardless of whether leadership is exogenous orendogenous, leading by example outperforms leading by words" (pg. 83).Leaders who actively take actions towards their goals are more effectivethan leaders who speak about their goals.
