Part One- General ProspectusFedEx is an American shipping and logistics company that started in 1965 with the ideas of Yale graduate Frederick W. Smith. Writing a term paper, he described challenges faced by freight shippers and proposed a system to accommodate time sensitive shipments. In 1971, Smith got firsthand experience in managing airfreight. He created FedEx, or Federal Express, in hopes of having the term federal mean something positive, although the Federal Reserve did turn down using his company. Officially beginning in 1973 with just under 400 members and 14 planes, that April 17 saw the first deliveries- 186 packages to 25 cities. FedEx lobbied for deregulation of airfreight and this was legislated in 1977, allowing them to use larger aircraft and grow the companys reach.1984 was when international shipping began. FedEx took over Flying Tigers network in 1989, becoming the largest cargo-only airline. It then began to deliver to 220 countries and territories. By acquiring Caliber System Inc. FedEx gained logistic solutions and ground delivery services, and more shipping expansion. 2004 was when Kinkos was acquired, then being reimaged as FedEx Office. Later, FedEx entered the parcel and ground market by working with the U.S. Postal Service. FedEx gained the U.K market in 2006, China and Hungary in 2007, India and Mexico in 2011, Poland and France and Brazil in 2012, and Africa and more of North America in 2014. In 2015, FedEx focused mainly on the North American market, acquiring one of the largest logistics providers, GENCO.FedEx works directly with the United States Postal Service, but is in competition with other shippers such as UPS. FedEx fought against UPS in legal terms and fights for the market, as many online retailers ship with one or another. In 2009, FedEx campaigned against UPS, accusing the competitor shipment company of receiving a bailout. The unionization of workers was questioned as well.
