Company BackgroundJ. Crew was founded in 1947 under the name Popular Sales Club.in 1983 the company changed its name to J. Crew in hopes of catching the preppy, affluent consumer's attention (Strickland, 2014, p. 1). J. Crew factory was launched in 1988 (Help-About j. crew, n.d). In 1989, they opened their first flagship store in New York (Help-About j. crew, n.d.). In 2006, Madewell was purchased by J. Crew to target younger females. J. Crew went global in 2011 with the first Canadian store. In 2012, they rolled out their Ecommerce site to 100 countries.J. Crew is a retail chain specializing in apparel for women, men and kids, as well as shoes and handbag salons located in stores (Help-About j. crew, n.d.). J. Crew is an omni-channel retailer, operating 265 J. Crew retail stores, 121 J. Crew Factory stores, as well as 88 Madewell stores as of June 2014 (Strickland, 2014, p. 1). J. Crew also specializes in wedding apparel providing solutions for the entire wedding party. The company also has factory Crew Cuts, catalogue, and an online presence. Millard Mickey Drexler is the current chairman and CEO of J. Crew Group since 2003 (Help-About j. crew, n.d.). Interestingly enough, Drexler interviews everyone who gets hired at J. Crew (J. crew and the man who dressed america, 2012). Jenna Lyons was hired in 2008 and currently serves as the creative director for the company.Company Mission and Vision J. Crews mission states that Quality is our highest priority.
