Entrepreneurship In 1930, Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small store in Beaconsfield, Iowa with the goal to provide good merchandise, appreciative service and low prices. In 1938, the partners and 14 others opened 15 stores across Iowa and Missouri as Hyde Vredenburg, Inc. In addition to the new stores, the company opened an office, warehouse, mill, bakery, and meat plant, all located in Lamoni, Iowa. Hyde and Vredenburg risked a lot by starting their business right around the time of the stock market crash that occurred in October of 1929. They also put themselves in a hard situation by starting their company when both partners were around the age of 50. By 1949, less than 20 years into the business, both partners retired and Vredenburgs son was named the president of the company. Outsourcing As Hyvee is based out of the Midwest, the companys distributors are all either in Iowa or Nebraska. Hyvee uses a few distributors such as Amber Pharmacy (based out of Omaha) for its pharmaceutical needs, Florist Distributing Inc. (based out of Des Moines) for flowers, plants and florist supplies, Perishable Distributors of Iowa, Ltd (based out of Ankeny) for meat, seafood, and ice cream, and Lomar Distributing, Inc. (based out of Des Moines) for specialty foods. Hyvee also uses Midwest Heritage Bank for its banking and wealth management.Empowerment Hyvee does well with giving their workers the things they need to succeed and to keep customers happy in the process.
