Starbucks Pursues LEED Certification as a Goal in 2015 Essay

Green strategies are the next best thing for companies that desire to keep up with the ever changing culture. Starbucks is leading the way with innovations that are changing their products, kitchen appliances, and stores. Beginning in 2012 Starbucks focused on better quality coffee, ethical treatment of their farmers and harvesters, recyclable cups, and becoming LEED certified. As of 2013 Starbucks had almost met every goal that they had set for their target date of 2015. This transition has not been easy for Starbucks in any way. As an organization they have undergone many changes and transitions in the past three years. Starbucks requires that all of their stores maintain that 50 percent of their energy comes from renewable clean energy sources. This requirement stems from Starbucks desire to become LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certified and as of 2013 they had reached 65 percent of their target goal. This transition has been pricy for Starbucks, although they have refused to release the exact cost (Environmental Leader). Another way that Starbucks is changing their company is through their cups. Their emphasis on being able to recycle almost everything is cutting down on the amount of waste that each store produces and puts in the local landfills. Not only have they placed recycle cans in convenient locations so that customers are more likely to throw their cups in recycle, Starbucks has reinvented the cup altogether. Starbucks now sell plastic cups for a lifetime worth of use and cheaper refills and they have invented a semi-reusable cup which can last for about one month. This semi-reusable cup will degrade after an average amount of use, providing you do not put it in the dishwasher, and then it may be recycled like the normal beverage cup.
