An Analysis of Duck Amuck Essay

As a reflexive animated short, Duck Amuck illustrates the enduring personality of a character through a manipulated, ever-changing environment. A formal analysis of the films use of color reveals an entity beyond the screen, a presence beyond its own reality. By allowing these aesthetics to constantly shift, Duck Amuck not only destroys conventional animation standards, but also develops the significance of characters and their connection to an audience outside of a physical domain.From the moment the film begins, color plays an essential role with establishing the nature of Daffy Duck. The vibrant red and green colors in the background of the introductory text allude to the whimsicality and energy of a character that has yet to be seen. This is immediately followed by a shot of parchment with bold, intrepid colors such as burgundy and blue against faded beige. For the first time, the audiences expectations are in the hands of the creator as a knights tale is presumably set up. Daffy Duck appears as this supposed hero, his goofiness and inexperience displayed through the perky purple and green colors paired for his outfit. The world around this character is also full of color, just as Daffy is full of life. However, when this world shortly loses its color thereafter, Daffy endures confusion, but his vigor remains potent.White is a recurring color throughout Duck Amuck.
