An Analysis of Dr. George Hill Hodel as the Major Suspect in the Elizabeth Short Murder Case Essay

Elizabeth's Short Life and Gruesome DeathWhether it was her love of black clothing or her raven hair, Elizabeth Short gained the nickname "The Black Dahlia" after her horrifying and gruesome death in 1947. Cut in half and drained of all blood (Latson), the killer has gone sixty years without a trace. Taking a look at the many suspects that crossed the path of the LAPD, one suspect rises above the ashes and takes center stage Dr. George Hill Hodel. As one of the many doctors that were suspects in the case, Dr. Hodel was never a major suspect, until his death in 1999. Hodel stands above other suspects, such as Robert "Red" Manley, Mark Hansen, or Jack Wilson, by his wit, his skills, and his behavior towards Elizabeth Short.Detective Steve Hodel, was never extremely close to his father. It wasn't until the years before his father's death in 1999 did Hodel ever meet his father, Dr. George Hill Hodel. Steve then grew close to his father, and it was while he was going through his father belong did he notice something strange (Hewitt). While going through a family album, two pictures of a young woman caught his eye. The woman's eyes looked away from the camera, a flower in her dark hair. Steve recounted that the photos looked familiar, but couldn't place it. "It was like a talisman. There was something about these photos," (Hewitt). The photos were of Elizabeth Short. With the photo's in hand, Steve was determined to follow every lead that connected his father and Short. Taking a look at the LAPD archives, he learned that his father had been once considered as a suspect, and a lot of evidence pointed to the doctor. Because of how the body was dismembered and disemboweled (Latson), it was believed that a medical professional was to blame for the death, and Steve didn't think it was a coincidence that his father had been a surgeon...
