A Business Strategy of the Quill Mobile Program for Creating Effective Writers Essay

Our mission is to help people become effective writers. Since launching in September 2014, Quill has been used by over 100,000 K-12 students from 1,500 schools. With Quill, students receive instant feedback on their work, enabling them to quickly see where they can improve. Teachers are provided with a free, high-quality curriculum, and it has grown rapidly thanks to teachers sharing it with other teachers. Weve seen tremendous interest in Quill among libraries, adult literacy centers, and afterschool programs. These programs often serve many low income students, and they want to use Quill to help their students. However, Quill is currently designed for schools, as teachers are required to create learning plans for students. With the new Quill Mobile program, we will automatically generate a personalized learning plan for students based on their needs. This feature, paired with mobile access, will enable us to reach millions of additional learners. As a non-profit, Quill is particularly focused on the needs of low income students to succeed. These students need our help the most, and they have the most to gain by using our program. Through conversations with ProLiteracy about learners in upstate NY, we found that many low income students primarily access the internet through their smartphones. A recent Pew Institute study found that 13 of Americans with an annual household income of less than 30,000 per year are smartphone-dependent. Their access to resources is limited, and they need tools that will help them learn through their mobile devices. In response to this need, we have begun the process of developing a mobile game focused on teaching writing and grammar skills. This mobile app takes advantage of Quills current content library. We have developed over 2,000 questions covering 50 Common Core standards, and our mobile app will be able to use these questions to help learners develop a variety of skills.
