An Analysis of Bach's Italian Concerto Published in 1735 Essay
I thought that Bachs Italian Concerto was interesting to listen to, but I didnt like it as much as the others that we have listened to already. I thought that the piece had interesting elements, and it was clear that in the piece, the piano was used to emulate the sound of an entire orchestra, which I thought was cool to listen to. Each instrument had a clear and defined line when they were expressed, and each instrument had its own sound to it, which was musically interesting to experience, especially in the third movement. What I didnt think worked so well was the continuity from movement to movement. As we have seen with previous pieces, each movement sounds different, but they move forward together as a cohesive unit, and the meaning from one movement to the next would not make sense if a movement was removed or put in another place. When listening to this piece, the movements feel detached in an ineffable way, which was a little off-putting.The Italian Concerto was published in 1735, during the latter part of Bachs life. It is called the Italian Concerto because it replicates the Italian style of music one slow movement in between two faster movements. It is speculated that this piece was written in separate phrases, with the first movement being written much earlier than the second two. This may be the reason that I felt that the movements felt separate, because the piece was written separately. Because of this, it is difficult for me to extract a message from the piece. Unlike previous pieces, the differences between sections of the piece are not as inherently clear, and so a cohesive thought is more difficult to parse.I enjoyed watching Schiff play the piece, as he had a smile on his face the majority of the time, which was very fun to watch, as his enjoyment was very contagious.
