An Analysis of Diction, Imagery and Alliteration in Alfred Lord Tennyson's Poem Essay

In this essay, I am going to be exploring how Alfred Lord Tennyson uses a variety of themes, such as diction, imagery, alliteration, to create such a meaningful poem. The poem gives us a vivid heroic image of an eagle, high on a crag in the mountains, then swooping down onto his prey.Alfred Lord Tennyson uses alliteration in the very first line, He clasps the crag with crooked hands. The words clasps, crag, crooked associates the eagle with age. and craggy describes more of the weathered face of the eagles. The hard and crisp c sounds that begin each of these words forms the sharp tone to the poem and the hard, sharp life of the eagle. Furthermore, ...lonely lands expresses the eagles solitude over a vast amount of area. All of the alliterated words draws the attention to the visual aspect as it pulls all of these element together.Another theme which Alfred Lord Tennyson used was personification, as he talks about the eagles hands. Tennyson makes the association of the eagles claws with human hands, this shows that the story of the eagle is not just the study of the eagle in its natural habitat, but we can gather that the eagle represents an elderly person. In line 4, as he uses the two strongest words wrinkled and crawls to describe the seas, it also reflects the image of old age that was linked with the eagle in line 1. Unlike the majestic eagle, the sea is not being portrayed as strong and proud in its old age, but as a feeble.
