The Challenges Odysseus Faces for Love Essay

Odysseus faces many challenges throughout his battle to return home to Ithaca. Whether it was saving the crew from temptation, or battling off giants and monsters, he was able to survive. But after all this, his love and loyalty to Penelope has been a major challenge. He falls under the spell of several women, and loses track of the time, but when he returns home to Ithaca, he does everything to gain back the love of his wife Penelope. As Odysseus leaves for his journey, he knows that there is a possibility he might not return to his mother, wife, and young son. But as his journey home ventures on, women become a major temptation. One woman is the sorceress of the island of Aiaia, Kirke. Odysseus and some of his men leave the ship to go and explore the palace of Kirke, and there they found her basking in her glorious beauty. She enchants all the men, except Odysseus, with her beauty and serves them food, but this food has been poisoned causing the men to turn into pigs. One of the men runs back to the ship to warn Odysseus of what has just happened. Odysseus receives a magical herb, moly, by Hermes that prevents him from turning into a pig at dinner. He agrees to have sex with the goddess. Penelope enchants him by saying, Put up your weapon in the sheath. We two shall mingle and make love upon our bed. So mutual trust may come of play and love (10. 375-77). After having sex, his men are turned back into humans, but she again charms them into staying with her for a full year. This is one of the first times Odysseus betrays Penelope. He cheats on her by having sex with another woman, and it seems like Odysseus has forgotten all about the love he once had with Penelope.
