The Battle Between Opposites in the Play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller Essay

Opposites Do Not AttractThe plot of The Crucible contains many different opposite characters and many different conflicts. Foil characters are characters that oppose each other, also known as opposites. There are many battles between opposites in the story. The theme of the story is intolerance, hysteria and reputation. The characters use these themes and express them in opposite manners thus creating foil characters. Miller uses John Proctor and Reverend Harris to show the battle between opposites in The Crucible.Firstly, John Proctor is a character that Arthur Miller uses to show as being honest and upright. He is a proud man that wants to protect his name and reputation throughout the small town in Massachusetts. When all the hysteria breaks out Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigails raid if he just confesses to his adultery, however he doesnt want this because it would completely ruin his name. In Act 4 when he is asked to sign the paper by Danforth he refuses to because of immense pride and fear of the public opinion. By refusing Proctor also believes he will go to heaven and be forgiven from his earlier sins. Miller uses Proctor to be an opposite with Reverend Parris.Secondly, Parris is a character that Miller uses to show as being very greedy and selfish. Throughout the play Parris only cares about himself and about his reputation with his friends. Even when his daughter was ill he continues to just care about himself and how the town will view him as having witchcraft. Proctor confronts Parris twice in the play and Parris lies with weak justification and does not deny any of the accusations. Parris also lies in the court when he says that he saw no one dancing in the woods when in fact he did see the girls dancing. At the end of the play Parris revealed as the selfish parasite that he is.Miller uses these two characters to help better explain...
