The Art of Emotion, Language, Memory and Imagination: The Emilie Gossiaux Story Essay

Lost and FoundEmotion, language, memory, and imagination all play a part in the story of Emilie Gossiaux and Alan Lundgard. However, sense perception had the biggest impact and role throughout the story. Alan knew from the moment he locked eyes with Emilie that he loved her. It was through this emotion of love that Alan never gave up on Emilie when all the doctors and nurses did. Emilie, who has an obsession with art, relies on her sense perception to pursue her passion of art. She understands art by visualizing drawings and hearing music. However, when the 18 wheeler truck hit Emilie, she lost her vision and her hearing. Through sense perception the doctors did not think she would even make it out alive. She was covered in blood, had multiple fractures in the pelvis and the face, her eyes did not flicker, and her body had swollen 28 pounds. The doctors assumed that at best, she would go to a nursing home but her mother perceived it differently. Like Alan, her mother still had faith that she would be okay because she had memories of Emilie as a young child having ear infections, sinus infections, and asthma. Her mother knew that Emilie was a fighter and that all these bad experiences had made her stronger. It was this difference in perception between the doctors and her mother that they had different ideas of what was happening to Emilie. Moreover, her mother was further assured when Emilie raised her left hand when her mother was talking to her about an eternal love between a mother and daughter. This showed that Emily was still alive and had a chance to properly function. However, once again the doctors claimed that moving did not indicate any mental functioning.
