To Kill a Mockingbird Demonstrates Love and Hate towards Small Town Lifestyle Small town life is fairly different in comparison to living in a big city Harper Lee uses the point of view from a small child to demonstrate the basics as to what it is like living within a small town in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In a close-knit community, townspeople grow familiar with each other and word travels a lot faster than it would in a larger city. In the town of Maycomb, everyone knows each other and their business, each person has a different opinion on living in a small town and some may not enjoy it as much as others. While some people choose to hate being connected, others feel it is a gift and a learning experience to live in a small town such as Maycomb.The role people play within a community has a large impact on how others view them as a person. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee gives her characters specific traits to portray their personalities. Around the town of Maycomb, Atticus is known as a reliable lawyer and family man. During the trial of Tom Robinson, a spectator commented that Atticus aims to defend him, I dont like that, people know Atticus is a fair lawyer but many did not like that he was putting in effort to win his case for a Negro. Bob Ewell is an angry alcoholic and does not do much of anything to help support his eight children there is not an ounce of kindness in his heart. Bob is the person to blame for the uprising of the Tom Robinson case, facts from the case would prove that Bob witnessed his daughter, Mayella, kiss a Negro and did not like that and beat her in order to teach her a lesson about staying away from Negros but Tom Robinson was blamed for Bobs actions instead.
