The Importance of Having a Professional Portfolio in the Human Services Field Essay

Importance of Professional Portfolios As portfolios contain a number of items regarding ones profession, it is important having a portfolio in the human services field for several reasons. Not only is it helpful in obtaining employment, but it is also an effective way to remember ones milestones as an individual. This can help each of us to remember our experiences, and also reflect on them in order to be more efficient within our career life and home life as we apply the education we have been given. For example, by acknowledging that I am first aid certified and have completed additional health and safety training, I now have a further knowledge to protect not only the people I care for in working, but also my personal friends and family. It may also motivate us to continue our education thus, furthering our learning skills and knowledge of not only our profession, but also in other aspects of life. It can help us to develop values (which we have discussed in class) such as maturity, enthusiasm, and creativity. Our ethics can also be applied by helping us to recognize the difference between right and wrong in certain situations, as our experiences related to artifacts within the portfolio remind us of what is important to us. We may become more confident by having a collection of our accomplishments and career-related items, which may also then improve our general attitudes throughout life as we see our strengths, and yet, also see room for improvement which teaches us humility. Lastly, having a professional portfolio can help individuals to obtain transferable skills. This includes responsibility, ambition, organization, and integrity as a humane member of society, which is a key importance of being within the human services field as well as any workplace....
