Visual Analysis The Goddess Sekhmet Walking around the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the artwork that caught my eye immediately was The Goddess Sekhmet. Long ago, this large, commanding figure at the corner of the museum, was originally placed in the Mut Temple at Karnack and later moved to the west bank of the Nile before entering the museum. The Goddess of Sekhmets broad and dominating form heightens the power and boldness of the statue. This granite statue depicts Sekhmet, the goddess of war. Despite her being a prominent figure of power, her head is replaced with that of a lioness. The artist appears to be someone who thinks woman are not capable of leading as men are because he didn't include Sekhmet's head. The statue is large enough to be taller than most people. The piece I am analyzing is The Hallucinogenic Toreador by Salvador Dal, painted with oil on canvas in 1969-1970. It is one of his monumental pieces, measuring at 157 x 118 inches. The piece is all about Unrequited Love, inspired by the Venus de Milo and Manolete, the toreador killed by a bull during a fight. The painting itself looks very colorful and chaotic. Standing back, you are able to see Manolete made up with the shadows of the Venus statues. His tie, shirt, and jacket are made up of the statues drapes. The Venuses themselves are in a diagonal line, becoming larger in size as they approach the right side. The two in the forefront are facing towards the viewer, while the rest are looking backwards. As your eye moves down the painting, you see a bull with colorful polka dots radiating out of it. The bright colors of the sky contrast with the dark waters, and reflect off of the center portion On first glance, this paintings bright background almost looks like a pleasant sunset scene, but upon further inspection, you notice the turmoil within.The ship is canted at an angle amidst tumultuous waters. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Scarlet Letter, Hester'sattitudes toward her adultery are ambivalent. This ambivalence is shown bybreaking the book into three different parts.
