Article 2 Using Turnover as a Recruitment Strategy, DuncanIn this article, Duncan explains different ways that a center director can take staff turnover, something that is usually negative, and turn it into a more positive and useful experience. Duncan begins by explaining the impact that staff turnover usually has on a center. She explains that the early childhood field has an estimated 33 turnover rate each year, an astounding number. She continues on to explain that staff turnover doesnt just pose financial and economic issues for a center- it negatively impacts childrens growth and development and interrupts a centers ability to provide effective programs for both staff and children. Human and financial resources go into staff turnover, and center directors should work to minimize turnover as much as possible. Duncan goes on to explain that the two costs associated with staff turnover are direct and indirect. Direct costs are the costs that the center actually pays out of pocket for, such as advertising for employment, cost of necessary trainings, and criminal history and drug checks. Indirect costs are the time and human resources that go into hiring new employees, such as going through applications, interviewing potential employees, organizing and administering orientations, updating employee files, introducing new employees to the center community, etc. Duncan goes on to emphasize the importance of calculating your centers exact turnover rate in order to put into perspective the cost of employee turnover and analyze why the turnover and recruitment processes may need a facelift in ones center and to develop recruitment strategies based off of turnover trends. She gives a formula for calculating the turnover rate, and also suggests using W2 forms as an indicator of turnover. W2 can not only indicate the amount of turnover a center has had in a year, but can also be used to look deeper into the causes or trends of the turnover happening in a specific center.
