The Benefits of OffshoringGlobalization and flattening are making the world an easier place to create, distribute, and receive information in the form of data. There are many factors and innovations causing the flattening of the world, making the world seem smaller because of their growth and impact to a worldwide scale. Outsourcing, one of the factors which have contributed to the flattening of the world, is defined as the process of utilizing third parties to perform certain functions. Offshoring, another similar, related method, is the relocation of a section or factory of a company in order to perform the same function with cheaper labor, lower taxes, subsidized energy, and lower health-care costs. These processes place the worlds economy and society in a beneficial direction. While offshoring may seem like a negative process because it displaces U.S. workers, it gives other countries the opportunity to involve themselves, collaborate, and evolve, making globalization and flattening positive for the worlds economy and businesses.When I first learned of the outsourcing trend, I perceived it as a major negative to every job in the United States as I wondered just which careers were actually stable anymore. In The World is Flat, written by Thomas L. Friedman, Friedman describes the ten major political events, innovations, and companies that he labels as the ten forces that flattened the world. Looking at these forces, it is not easy to tell exactly whether they are a positive or negative factor to the worlds society and economy right off the bat. However, upon research, the tools for collaboration that these flattening methods have created have actually become essential in the daily lives of the businesses impacted by the flattening methods. Even the factors outsourcing and offshoring, though they appear as if they could only do harm to the economy in terms of careers and job opportunities, provide many benefits that outweigh the negatives.
