A Plot Summary of Tim Burton's Movie "Edward Scissorhands" Essay

Edward Scissorhands is another movie full of eye-candy by Tim Burton. The movie begins with the introduction of a strange little town where everything is very uniform and colored with a pastel motif. Then turning to the very different, dark mansion on the mountain, home of the star Edward Scissorhands(Johnny Depp), you will find quite the opposite. The plot and underlying theme begin when two opposites come together Peggy (Dianne Wiest) brings down Depp s character from the mountain. It is at this point that it becomes apparent that the underlying theme is sociological and psychological trends.Depp plays an interesting character that has scissors as hands and represents an oddity to the community that he is brought into. The community is portrayed as a stereotypic perfect little society where the husbands all go to work in the morning and the wives do house work and gossip all day. He is brought into a household where he meets his stunning co-star Winona Ryder who plays the daughter of Peggy. The town is full of very talkative housewives, which represent the norms of society. The differences of Depps character and the community are shone throughout the movie. At first the housewives are quite curious about the new and interesting guest. Depp then becomes the talk of the town and everyone wants him to trim their hedges, cut their hair, and various things of that nature. He becomes what could be described as a trend to the town. But he proves to be nothing more than a trend because after a series of events in the move, the society is very quick to turn their back on him. He is now looked upon as an outcast except by Winona s character that is falling in love with him. The movie goes through many stages of community acceptance and social trends. The film ends with Edward being outcast by the community and a staged death leaving him alive, alone,...
