A Movie Analysis of Sankofa Essay
Sankofa is a movie that I have been waiting to see for about one year. I heard about the movie through my cousin. She really did not tell me what the movie was about, but she told me enough to keep my interest in it. When I first heard the title of the movie, in class, it sounded familiar to me. Finally, I remembered that this was the movie I had been waiting to see. Sankofa was a very moving movie. It is the kind of movie that makes you think about yourself and how you have become. After viewing this film I remember leaving with asking myself, do I remember? How do I live my life? Sankofa brought out many issues. Some of these issues are still relevant today in the American society. Some of these issues are the issue of skin color, religion, and remembering.The film starts out with an African-American model taking pictures on a beach. "Sexy" pictures are being taken of her by a white photographer. A man named Sankofa is screaming at her in his native language. As this happens she precedes to hide behind the white photographer. As time goes on, in the film, she follows the tour group into the cave and in trying to find her way out of the cave she is transported in to another time. She goes back to slave times. It is here that she finds her roots. She remembers what her ancestors went through and how she was disgracing them, now. She experienced what her ancestors went through, from the branding with a hot iron to the whippings across the back. During her journey she received a little bird from the man she loved.
