A Plot Review of Amitav Ghosh's Novel "The Town by the Sea" Essay

"The Town by the Sea" is a prose written by acclaimed novelist Amitav Ghosh. He is one of the most important Indian writers in English even today. Ghost attended school in India and England, conducted field works in Egypt and currently lives in New York. In his works he attempts to express the silenced voices of those not represented in history. An extremely versatile author, his body of works includes novels like The Circle of Reasons, The Shadow Lines, The Glass Palace and most recent The Hungry Tide. Ghosh works of non-fiction include The Imam and the Indian, In an Antique Land, Dancing in Cambodia and Countdown it is a prose about the devastation caused by tsunami that the sub-continent in December 24.Ghosh narrates the story of the Director of Malaria Research Center in Car Nicobar Island. On December 25, 2004, the Director had been in Port Blair (Andaman) for official reasons. He had left his family in Malacca (Nicobar), where his home was. The next morning, the tsunami had hit. Soon it occurred to the Director that the tsunami would have hit the Nicobar Island.After making several calls, he was able to talk to his 13 years old son. With great difficulty he had clung to the rafters of the church when the waves had hit. When his father asked him about his mother and sister, he replied ".....they just disappeared". His son was crying for the first time because he thought he would be scolded and blamed for what had happened. The Director went to Malacca and searched for his wife and daughter. Since he could not find them and he brought back his son to Port Blair.While he went back again to search for them, Ghosh offered to go with him. While they were traveling, Ghosh noted that the tsunami had caused the maximum possible damage to life and property, but it had left the nature unharmed. They visited a medical camp...
