Characterization Drives Gary Paulsen\'s Transall Saga Essay

In the story Transall Saga by Gary Paulsen, Characterization drives the plot. Mark has the characteristics of being Brave, Intelligent, and Curious.Mark is Brave. The Inciting Force in the story is when Mark Falls into the light that transports him to Transall (5). When Mark falls in, it pushes the plot because you don't know where he ended up or what will happen to him. Will Mark survive and where will the light take him? A Catalyst in the story is when Mark saves Leeta from the howling thing (45). This pushes the plot because Mark feels more confident and in power, which sets him off to explore other things. Mark also finds an arrow in a tree after he kills the howling thing, which explains that there might be other signs of life in the world he's in. Another Catalyst in the story is when Mark tries to escape the Tsook village (103). This pushes the plot because the Tsook's treat Mark differently after, They always watch Mark as if they don't trust him.Mark is intelligent in the story. A Catalyst in the story is when Mark constructed the bomb so they could escape Listra (187). This pushes the plot because if he hadn't gotten out of the village Sarbo, Yonk and Mark probably would have died. Mark remembers the Potion from chemistry class and makes it with the resources around him, this shows Mark is intelligent. Another Catalyst in the story is when Mark figures out how to open the cages with a little help from Yonk (190). This pushes the plot because Mark can now escape from Listra and return to the Tsook village to see Megaan. Another Catalyst is when Mark tells Tybor how to make the armor to fit his body (123). This pushes the plot because the Tsooks now have advanced technology that they did not have before thanks to Mark, but the Merkon does not like the look...
