A Comparison between Vladimir and Estragon in Waiting for Godot, a Play by Samuel Beckett Essay

Vladimir vs. EstragonIn the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, there exist two highly eccentric and vaudevillian characters by the names of Vladimir and Estragon. At first glance, these two characters appear to be very similar, exhibiting highly comical and witty behavior. Also, these two characters appear to be very compatible in terms of the way in which they speak to each other. Their conversations during the play often consist of very rapid back and forth patterns of speech, indicating that they know each other quite well. While Vladimir and Estragon have many immediate similarities, they also have a fair number of subtle differences. Beckett alludes to these differences by assigning the characters the nicknames Didi and Gogo respectively. The name Didi is derived from the French verb dire, meaning, to speak. Likewise, the name Gogo means to go or to do. Along with these nicknames, Beckett incorporates in Vladimir the tendency to talk more than act. Similarly, Beckett incorporates in Estragon the tendency to want to go or leave the premises. Beckett gave these nicknames to these characters in order to make their subtle differences more apparent to the reader.There are many instances of Estragon and Vladimir speaking back and forth in fast-paced dialogue. For example, early in Act 14, the two characters discuss why they wish to meet with Godot. Vladimir begins by saying, Im curious to see what he ahs to offer. Then well take it or leave it. What exactly did we ask him for? Were you not there? I cant have been listening. Oh nothing very definite. A I kind of prayer. Precisely. A vague supplication. Exactly. And what did he reply? That hed see. That he couldnt promise anything. That hed have to think it over (14). This passage shows how the two characters seem to finish each others sentences, indicating that they are very familiar...
