Response to Bill Watterson A Christian Perspective Many people say that college is where you go to become successful-where you branch your future endeavors off of. They say that status, money,and business are the most important components to life- that these high-class goals are what are the most fulfilling, the keys to happiness. InBill Watterson's article, "Some Thoughts on the Real World by One WhoGlimpsed It and Fled" goes entirely against this theory, naming universitythe basis for creativity, the potential beginning of a life filled withyour passions and ultimate dreams. He talks about how once we enter the"real world", it is one of our main responsibilities to keep our mindsfresh, to keep our eyes open, and to keep learning and growing within ourtrue passions. Bill Watterson's opening analogy of his painting Michelangelo's"Creation of Adam" on the ceiling of his dorm room completely made senseto me. Though the story at first seems completely unrelated, his point soonbecomes clear- our moments of willpower often come from some "inexplicableinner imperative" rather than work that is demanded, even if it is futileor looked upon as entirely unnecessary. As more of an artistically-minded individual, I can relate toWatterson. I know my "true passion" lies in creating. As far as "doing"something where my talents lie, there is nothing that is more rewarding tome from a daily perspective than creating something with my own fingertips.But along with that lies an entirely different aspect. It's almost asthough unless you have one true passion that you are completely envelopedin, attempting to intertwine both work and love is an inevitable vacuumthat entirely suctions the happiness out of what you feel pulled towardsdoing for your own sanity and happiness.
