A Comparative Analysis of Scott Fitzgerald\'s Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Edith Wharton\'s Roman Fever Essay

Romance and love are topics most people can relate to. However romance does not come easy to all. Most great love stories come with a plethora of turbulent obstacles. Sometimes those Obstacles are other women. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's Bernice Bobs her Hair and Edith Wharton's Roman Fever we see that the only obstacle these characters face are each others friends. Both F. Scott's Fitzgerald's Bernice Bobs her Hair and Edith's Wharton's Roman fever share the same thematic outlook of femininity and competition. Although the two are similar in those aspects they differentiate when it comes to Age and betrayal.F. Scott's Fitzgerald's Bernice Bobs her Hair classically portrays the relationship between two women and how they communicate with one another as-well as men in the 1920s. Marjorie, a dominating blonde socialite ,is portrayed as superior to others because she values sex appeal, power of status, and is overall is the quintessential idealized definition of what an it girl should be at this time in history. Much of Marjorie's characteristic would be considered controversial in a post Victorian era. The other side of femininity Fitzgerald portrays is found in Bernice's character. Bernice is a fragile clumsy outsider who seeks guidance from her cousin Marjorie. As the story progresses, we see that Bernice struggles when trying to keep up with Marjorie's advanced seductive ways. Bernices conservative outlook of femininity is quickly abandoned. Her fast transition from youthful child to seductive woman tragically causes her to be taken advantage of.Marjorie angered that her prodigy has now taken a liking to one of the boys she is interested in isnt pleased with the new found competition between herself and Bernice. Her goal is now to set out to destroy the popularity she has helped Bernice to achieve. Marjorie simply competes for her title and popularity back by convincing Bernice to cut off her godly locks, which the boys adore, this way the attention from the boys is shifted back...
