A Comparative Analysis of Olympia and Grande Odalisque Essay

The practice of painting nude, especially the female nude amongpainters, has been observed for years, with an emphasis on the time manhas perfected the illustration of a realistic human anatomy. It is notseen as taboo, nor is it seen as a scandalous image. It is a celebrationof the feminine sensuality, as well as the illustration of the artist ofthe ability to render realistic anatomical details. Many renowned andaccomplished artists have created their own rendition of the femalenude, including the conduit of French realism and impressionism known asEdwouard Manet and the neoclassicist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.Manet painted his oil on the canvas entitled Olympia'' (see Figure 1).One of Ingres' known oil paintings is entitled Grand Odalisque'' (seeFigure 2), a reclining female nude. These two works represent the valuesand artistic considerations for the female nude. The pose allows thepainter to see the nude subject's body in a way that reveals the body'scontours, evokes the sensual, even sexual features and representationsof certain anatomical parts. These two paintings are different from oneanother as they are different from other reclining female nudes in termsof what the subject addresses from a socio-political, socio-cultural andeven socio-historical perspective. Both of them were created to impactthe audience. The stimulus is the powerful image of the female nude andits implications hinged on the context. Both Edwouard Manet's Olympiaand Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres' Grand Odalisque reveal thetraditional reclining female nude, which is a common subject of paintersat the time. A closer examination of the characteristics of thepaintings via its socio-historical implication reveal how each of thewoman in the painting is different from one another, not only in termsof their position in the social echelon also based on how their currentpredicament appear to have impacted their own personal emotional andpsycho-sociological disposition.Both works share the similarity of using the reclining female nude as afocal point in the painting.
