A Comparison between the Greek Goddess Athena and the Roman Goddess Minerva Essay

The Greek Goddess, Athena is one of the most well-known Gods of Greekmythology. Minerva is, not only associated with Athena, but she is also animportant God in Roman religion. There are many differences andsimilarities between the Roman goddess, Minerva and the Greek goddess,Athena such as what they represent, what they were known for and how theyare depicted. Athena was created by the Greeks in ancient times whileMinerva's mythology, at least to the Romans, was borrowed from Italianreligion (who also embraced the Greeks beliefs.) Athena and Minerva areassociated with each other majority of the time and they share manycomparable qualities and contrasting differences. The Greek goddess, Athena is the daughter of Zeus and considered oneof the twelve great Olympians Minerva, in Roman mythology, is the daughterof Jupiter. According to WhosWho Classical Mythology by Micheal Grant andJohn Hazel, "When Hephaestus clove open the head of Zeus with an axe,Athena sprang forth adult and fully armed, ready for battle." (56) Also,Myths of Greece and Rome by H.A. Guerber, states that "Jupiter bade one ofhis sons, Vulcan, cleave his head open with an ax. With cheerful alacritythe dutiful god obeyed and no sooner was the operation performed, thanMinerva (Pallas, Athene) sprang out of her father's head, full-grown, cladin glittering armor, with poised spear, and chanting a triumphant song ofvictory." (55) Both of these books clearly indicate that Minerva andAthene's stories of birth are one in the same. Even though the other Godsmentioned have different names, the general plot of the story stillremains. Their beginning is just the basis for these two differentgoddesses Athena's symbol is the owl. The owl is linked to one being wisein Greek religion. On the other hand, according to Barry Cunliffe, "Minervaa Roman goddess, was the protector of intellectual and manual skills" Here,Minerva is described as the God of intellect and manual skills even thoughAthena and Minerva are supposed to be associated.
