The Signs and Symptoms of Hypersomnia Essay

HypersomniaWhen I was a little girl, my parents used to wake me up every single time when I took a nap during the daytime. Sometimes the nap would take from 5 to 6 hours. I always felt sleepy just right after school. As a result, I have wasted lots of times during the day due to oversleeping. I felt confused, disoriented, and had blurry vision every time I woke up. I didnt really know what was happening to me. All I knew was that I was really unproductive during those episodes. One day, my parents decided to take me to the hospital, and surprisingly, they found out that I was having hypersomnia in my adolescent years. Back then, the medical technology was not as developed in a third country. So the doctor simply told my parents not to worry too much because the disease would go away within a few weeks. Still things didnt get better like the doctor had anticipated. I was tired of my hypersomnia controlling me. By chance, I have learnt some ways on how to control and predict the disease. Now, I am able to avoid my daytime sleepiness. Even though hypersomnia has complex causes and serious effects, the condition can still be treated when it first appears. Most experts agree on a definition for hypersomnia. One definition given by authors Lee Lerner and Wilmoth Lerner is clear and concise to understand. Lerner and Lerner define hypersomnia as excessive daytime sleepiness, uncontrollable sleep attacks, and in some rare case of it, people fall asleep at highly inappropriate times, such as driving a car or doing some dangerous tasks, which can lead them to lose their lives (3951). Another expert on sleep medicine, Laurie J. Fundukian, describes hypersomnia as a condition of excessive sleepiness during normal waking hours. This episode is sometimes called sleep drunkenness.
