An Overview of the Tipping Tradition in the United States of America Essay

Here is some advice to whoever's listening when dining at a high class establishment, always pull out chairs, never put your elbows on the table, work from the outside fork in and carry plenty of dollar bills even to the restroom. Following these simple rules can prevent embarrassment from a situation like this one. My wallet was in my coat, which was at the table. I however, was in the men's room. Upon entering I couldn't help but notice an attendant by the sink-closely guarding a pile of towels. Without any cash for a tip, I am left with two choices gracefully accept this mans assistance then run for the door when it comes time to tip or avoid any possible service from him and leave without washing...Tipping is something that can be very confusing. Who do we tip, when and by how much? To understand tipping, one should look at how it originated. Some say it goes back to the Middle Ages. During this time, wealthy travelers tossed coins to beggars to ensure their own safety. The word itself is rumored to come from one of two places. It may have come from the Dutch word "tippen" when people would tap on a mug for service, or it could have come from patrons of English taverns who would leave coins before ordering "to insure promptitude," hence the acronym tip ( Market Place ).Even throughout history, people have resented giving tips. The Anti-Tipping society of America, an alliance of over 100,000 traveling salesman were able from 1905-1919 managed to have the custom abolished in seven states ( Tipper Lore ).Today tipping is accepted as a social norm in most parts of the world and in America the traditional tip of 10-15 has shown signs of gradually increasing towards 20.
