The Role of Food in Bringing People Together Essay

Vices bring people together. Smoking and drinking has the same effect. This common interest creates an instant bond. Smokers outside huddle near each other, talk to people they never met before and will not see again. For five minutes, they are best friends. In a bar, eventually it is the reaction to the alcohol that spurs conversation. However, people still collect together in one place, providing a medium for conversation to exist. In regards to food, rather than vices, perhaps a better word to use is indulgencesXnot the Roman Catholic kind regarding temporal punishment and sin . The claim, however, remains the same. Joining a friend for a meal could have a simple objective of eating and getting full, wanting to try a new location, or lack of anything better to do. Whether it is conversation regarding what to order, waiting for the nourishment to arrive, through the course of the feast, or relaying thoughts on the refection itself, conversation spurs. The food is the tool that brings the pair together. Work colleagues often join for lunch. Business partners meet for dinner. Families congregate at banquets during reunions, weddings, or funerals. Food is ever present, and has fully integrated into being there when people join together, either as a reason all by itself, or as a side note. While in grammar school, sharing a cookie bar or giving someone an unwanted lunch accessory provides for instant friendship. Tracing food back even to the cavemen, if an animal was being cooked, fellow members of the group would circle around and wait for the feast, no doubt they were dancing, grunting, or signaling in some fashionXtheir only means of conversation in their day. Food has seemingly always brought people together to converse and get to know each other better. Indulgences often do. Food as a vice, maybe dessertK.but that is a whole new paper....
