An Analysis of the Themes and Language of Maru, a Novel by Bessie Head Essay

Journal 1- Maru by Bessie HeadThis novel includes so many themes such as racism, social class, male and female relationships, oppression, friendship, rivalry, jealousy, spirituality, love, and confusion. Bessie Head expresses all of these themes through her use of beautiful, poetic, and mystical language style. This book is a perfect piece of art when it comes to all of its great detail from moral and ethical aspects. I especially admired the way she described Dikeledi, Moleka, and Maru. Head also did a meticulous job when portraying the life of Margret Cadmore, and you can see how dedicated Head was when coming up with the character of Margret Cadmore because she has an obvious connection to her which makes this novel very thrilling. This is an extraordinary story, filled with a lot of emotion right from its beginning. It's a tale of how prejudice ruled and divided people of a single community. I highly recommend others to read this book because I feel many individuals can connect to the conflicts and unions that are embedded in this story. For instance, the characters in this story are very much helpless at most times, and I believe there are many people in this world that deal with being helpless which can derive from many different things but still causes the effect of vulnerability. While reading page after page, I had a riveting experience that caused me to open my ideas to cultural problems that people face in Africa all of the time. In this book Bessie Head tackled a developing but dangerous problem that Africans are not eager to confront but which had been the nuisance of the continent, delaying every development. I can say that this is just another aspect of segregation that happens many places, even in America. Segregation and race were created by people of power that wanted to control the general public, and when you think of it people want power everywhere you go...
