DBQ Smuggling in the CaribbeanThesis During the late 18th century, smuggling in the Caribbean was caused by the influence of the French, the need for profit to be made, and mercantilism. Smuggling attracted immense attention and proved to be fatal for the economies in which commodities were being smuggled to and the government responses include seizing goods, encouraging informants, as well as implementing new rules and regulations that Foreign Merchant Ships must abide to.One of the main causes that led to smuggling was the action of making profit particularly evident in Document 1. As a result, they have smuggled sugar into the English islands, and then have exported it to Europe under the name of English sugar, thus increasing their profits.This was made easier because during this time period, a few years earlier the American Revolution was taking place, and they were successful in overthrowing the authority that Britain had over them.
