The Plot Structure of Crazy Eights, a Play by David Lindsay Essay

Crazy Eights Plot StructureCrazy Eights is a play that entails the possible romance of two unlikely lovers. We look into an interesting scene that pokes the borders of being untraditional in structure. More often than not a traditional play will have a short exposition and have longer sections of rising action and a little bit of a fall out from the climax. A traditional play must contain 8 essential elements to portray a traditionally structured plot. Each of these elements must be incorporated even if some are shorter than others or shorter than their respective common length. Crazy Eights has a traditional structure due to the fact that it contains all elements linearly and causally even though it is laid out in odd segments of time making it unconventional in structure but traditional in nature. Firstly the plot of the play needs to be linear and causal. This show accomplishes that well with no odd hiccups or things happening out of nowhere for no apparent reason. The play takes place over the course of what could be 20-30 minutes in Connies apartment. There are no odd flashbacks or peculiar time lapses and everything seems to happen for a reason. These two things being in check leads us to start examining elements of Freytags Pyramid and how this play fits into its many components. The exposition of this play allows us to get an insight into the characters, discovering who each of them are and what they do whether it is an ex-convict (Connie) an angry old man (Mr. Dugan). The conflict is then begun right when Benny is caught for creepily trespassing in Connies House. That being said Freytags period is kind of manipulated in this particular play because of the way that exposition and the rising action have such an overlap. Much like many other plays, there is definitely an overlap between exposition and rising action but Crazy Eights has a very large overlap...
