Background Information of Sam Walton the Founder of Wal-Mart Essay

Background Information Sam Walton, the son of Mr. And Mrs. Tom Walton, was born in Marshall, Missouri. As a kid he was very ambitious. He played football, baseball, and basketball. He was also a boy scout. Then he moved to Shelbina, Missouri a tiny town with about 1,500 people in it. After a couple of years his family moved again to Columbia, Missouri. Here he attended Hickman High School. At Hickman he was the president of the student body and he led his football and basketball teams to state championships. Since Columbia was so close to the University of Missouri Walton decided to go there. At the University of Missouri he became the president of the universities student body, the president of the senior men s honor society, an officer in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and was the captain and president of Scabbard and Blade, the elite military organization of the ROTC. Walton was also the president of the Burall Bible Class that housed students from both Missouri and Stephens College. In June of 1940, Walton graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor s degree in business. After graduation Walton accepted a job offer to work at J.C. Penney. He worked there for about eighteen months and then he quit because he was called to serve in the Army. He wasn t in the Army to long because of he had an irregular heart condition. In the process of going to the Army he met his wife Helen Robson. A year later on Valentines Day of 1943 they got married in her hometown of Claremore, Oklahoma. Here he got the idea to start his own retail business and with 20,000 dollars of Helen s fathers help he was able to open his first discount variety store in Newport, Arkansas.
